Detailed Functioning of a Side Entry 2-Piece Floating Ball Valve

Basic Structure:

  • Ball Design: The floating ball is housed inside a 2-piece split body.
  • Body Construction: The valve consists of two main body pieces that are bolted together, which allows easier assembly and maintenance.
  • Seating: The ball is not fixed to the valve stem but is held in place between two valve seats.

Working Principle:

  • Open Position: When the valve is open, the ball’s bore (hole) aligns with the pipeline, allowing fluid to flow through with minimal resistance.
  • Closing Mechanism: As the valve is turned to close, the ball rotates 90 degrees, blocking the flow path. The upstream pressure pushes the ball against the downstream seat, creating a tight seal.
  • Floating Action: The “floating” aspect refers to the ball’s slight movement, which helps maintain the seal by pressing against the downstream seat when pressure is applied.

 Sealing and Pressure Handling:

  • Seal Creation: The floating ball design ensures that the ball is pushed against the downstream seat under pressure, enhancing the sealing capability.
  • Pressure Limitation: Best suited for moderate pressure applications; the design relies on pipeline pressure to assist in sealing, which may limit its effectiveness in high-pressure scenarios.

Operation:

  • Actuation Methods: Can be manually operated with a lever or automated using pneumatic, electric, or hydraulic actuators.
  • Flow Control: The valve allows for either full on/off control or throttling, depending on the application.

Advantages:

  • Ease of Maintenance: The 2-piece design allows for easy disassembly and maintenance without removing the entire valve from the pipeline.
  • Cost-Effective: Generally, more economical than trunnion-mounted valves for smaller sizes and lower pressure applications.
