Thermal expansion and contraction are bound to occur in industrial piping systems and structural installations. These expansions and contractions are caused by variations in ambient temperature, day-night cycles, weather conditions, or changes in pipeline fluid temperature. When such movements are restricted, excess stresses can develop, leading to equipment failure, structural damage, or overload. Pipe Hangers and Support India equipped with low-friction slide bearings provide a cost-effective and reliable solution, allowing controlled movement to occur safely and efficiently.
Slide bearings allow regulated movement between the structure bore and its foundation, thus decreasing friction, and avoiding the build up of damaging stress. To be effective, these bearings have to be designed to maintain low friction and high loads to provide reliability to the system over a long period of time.
Slide bearings with a low friction make use of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), one of the lowest-coefficients of friction of solids. This is what makes PTFE ideal in those applications that require smooth controlled motion. The pads are designed to the exact size needed to provide the correct compressive stress to ensure consistent performance in a large operating range.
These bearings require no routine care and they can run dry to the end hence lubrication is not required. They are built to withstand tough conditions, working between -200 degree celsius and +150 degree celsius and can withstand organic and inorganic chemicals. They are also able to accept small portions of particle embedment without failure which contributes to their consistency in the field.
Few slide bearings are standard low-friction, though commonly a bonded PTFE pads against a mirror-finished plate of stainless steel with the two components mounted on carbon steel supporting plates. For corrosive environments, fully stainless steel constructions with PTFE slider pads are available. Alternative materials, such as bronze-based or graphite-based sliders, can be supplied for high-temperature or specialized applications.
Low friction slide bearings feature a compact design, making them suitable for locations where other bearing types cannot be accommodated. They are easy to set up in the field and do not need special tools and equipment. The bearings may be given to either welding or bolting and there are dust seals to be used in dusty or contaminated places.
Low friction slide bearings by Pipe Hangers and Support India have proven to be a reliable way of managing thermal movement in pipelines and structural components. They have low maintenance, high durability and can work in a very broad temperature range hence increasing system life, improving safety and reducing long term operation risks.
