Dynamic Restraint Systems for Industrial Piping: Hydraulic Snubbers by PHS

Pipe support systems play a critical role in ensuring the safety, stability, and performance of industrial piping networks. Among these systems, hydraulic snubbers and rigid restraints are essential components that help manage movement and protect infrastructure under both normal and abnormal operating conditions.

About Pipe Hangers & Supports Pvt Ltd – Hydraulic Snubbers

Pipe Hangers & Supports Pvt Ltd is a leading manufacturer of spring hangers, support systems, and related accessories. The company supplies to major power plants, refineries, nuclear installations, and process industries across India and international markets. With over 25 years of experience, the organization has built a strong presence across sectors such as power generation, petroleum, oil and gas, offshore, water, and HVAC industries.

Originally incorporated in 1984 as Myricks Piping Systems Pvt Ltd, the company introduced advanced pipe hanger and support technology in India with expertise from Support Technology & Products UK. In 2010, the company was rebranded as Pipe Hangers & Supports Pvt Ltd, strengthening its identity while continuing to enhance its technology and product range.

Understanding Hydraulic Snubbers

Hydraulic snubbers, also known as dynamic restraints, are designed to control movement in piping systems during abnormal conditions such as earthquakes, turbine trips, and sudden valve closures. Under normal operating conditions, these devices allow free thermal expansion and contraction of pipes. However, when subjected to sudden dynamic forces or impulse loads, they activate instantly to restrict movement and protect the system.

These snubbers operate using pressurized hydraulic systems, enabling installation in various orientations and positions. Their design allows easy verification of fluid levels through piston rod positioning, ensuring reliability and ease of maintenance.

Role of Rigid Struts in Dynamic Restraint Systems

Rigid struts are another key component used in pipe support systems. They are designed to handle extreme industrial requirements, supporting loads exceeding 90-ton force and lengths up to 6 meters. These struts incorporate spherical bearings at hinge points, allowing angular movement and accommodating off-center loading conditions.

One of the major advantages of rigid struts is their adjustable design. They allow length adjustments of up to 100 mm at the installation site without requiring disconnection, making them highly efficient during commissioning and maintenance.

Welding Clevis and Structural Connectivity

The welding clevis is used to connect the strut to structural or steel frameworks. It is designed to provide flexibility, allowing angular adjustments of up to 5 degrees and 90 degrees depending on the configuration. This ensures proper alignment and load distribution within the system.

Clamp Systems for Secure Pipe Support

To ensure effective restraint and stability, various clamp types are used in conjunction with rigid struts. These include yoke-type clamps, double-plate clamps, and conventional three-bolt clamps. Each type is designed to provide a strong and secure grip on pipes, maximizing restraint efficiency even under dynamic conditions.

For example, yoke-type clamps are formed from a single plate and are often used with sheathed U-bolts for added protection. Double-plate clamps offer additional rigidity, while three-bolt clamps provide flexibility for pipes with slight dimensional variations.

Ensuring Safety and Performance

In modern industrial environments, piping systems are exposed to varying loads, temperature changes, and unexpected dynamic events. The use of hydraulic snubbers, rigid struts, and advanced clamp systems ensures that these systems remain stable, safe, and efficient.

By combining engineering precision with robust design, dynamic restraint systems not only protect infrastructure but also enhance operational reliability across industries.
